Celebrating Arts Month 2020, un-intentionally part 1: Sketching Faces by Fran Alvarez

Should you be one of those who are on a look-out for artsy related-events, you’ll be glad to know there’s a lot going on in Manila, most of them free.

For one thing, I just wanted to attend Bad Student’s Risograph Workshop that day, but it turns out, Uniqlo had their own series of workshops happening on the same day as part of their UTMeArtPH x Fiesta launch! So much happening at the same time, and it’s just the first day of February.

I signed up for Fran Alvarez‘s Sketching Faces session, wanting to pick-up something new on sketching people quickly, especially when you’re trying to capture people or moments when you’re commuting. And apparently this is what Fran was doing too, when her Jeepney commutes home were taking a while. And yes! We both salute the Retail workers who get their make-up done in a moving Jeepney.

It was a pretty quick session, and each participant was basically given 3 minutes to do a quick drawing of the person in front of them. Now that may not be a lot of time, so you’ll be trained in a sense to pick-up the memorable details of the person that you were trying to draw. What accessories or clothes was he or she wearing? What were the noticeable features (or maybe the expressions) on their faces..?

I actually got pretty tired after drawing like 5-7 faces There was a tendency to be lazy after a while, but it was fun. I felt like my 2009 self again where we were made to do self-portraits as an illustration exercise. Yes, we also did the no lifting of pen and no looking at paper exercises too. I liked the output of that the most. I also appreciate the part where we’re all beginners, so I guess less pressure of performing? As Fran said, anyone can illustrate.

Culture Conoisseur sa Kanto: Connoiseur = an expert judge in matters of taste. Kanto = street corner. Combined, the person who has a taste for the arts, but not the too high-brow ones, since her kanto mind can only process as much. Currently treading the world of IT but is still living a Creative Life in little ways that she can.
